through the narrow gaps of the main street buildings
fear instilled through voices
the clearest choices
the nearest fates
crawled through the alleys
bright and shallow air
growing painfully clear

crawled back late one night
looked pretty different but the eyes were hers
glowing, surely knowing
of the plight that struck
left us out of luck
sparked another candle
grabbed the handle
and burned through town
one more flaming arrow
crisp to the marrow
fled without a trace

but we saw her bloody face
and stopped her in her tracks
and gave her dripping flowers of thanks
and hugged her for having our backs

to whatever safer land
