lost hopes and crumpled shames
we can dream of crossing its deadly moat
or attempt to play its games
the heart sinks right at play
as if on time for its off day
hands clutched, weapons armed

where no one’s stepped

first step’s always the hardest
next step’s always the longest
the rocks may sink but if we jump

or is that the river talking?
